Finding a Hotel in Kamloops

• A WorldWeb.com Travel Guide for Kamloops, British Columbia.
Kamloops has a long history as a trade and transportation corridor but has only become a tourist destination in recent years. The development of a recreational and sporting industry has transformed this transportation hub into a vibrant lakeside town bustling with sportsmen and tourists. Skiers, hikers and bikers use Kamloops year round as a base from which to explore the rolling coastal mountains, clear rivers and warm, golden beaches in British Columbia's Thompson Okanagan region.

While contemplating the beautiful and expansive landscape, it becomes clear why more and more people are coming to Kamloops every year. Local entrepreneurs have responded to the increase in tourism traffic by establishing numerous hotels and motels. A wide range of options lets tourists choose the lodging best suited to their budget and preference; close to downtown, off the highway or in a quieter location near a riverside park.

DOWNTOWN

Downtown Kamloops is situated on the south shore between the train yards to the north and Highway 1 to the south, in the middle of the valley, surrounded by rolling mountains. This area is a hub of activity with boutique stores, good restaurants, cozy cafes, colourful galleries and gift shops.

The South Thompson River flows along the north end of downtown and running alongside it is a beautiful trail, one leg of a network that weaves through the townsite, past the rippling river, over rocky banks and through colourful wildflowers. Several accommodations can be found nearby on Victoria Street.

Visitors looking for a unique experience can stay at the grand, six-storey Plaza Heritage Hotel, decorated in 1920's style. Families will enjoy the rich surroundings, a perfect complement to a day out on the Kamloops Heritage Railway's Steam Train, which can be boarded just a couple of blocks north at the train yards. Leisure time is also well spent walking the historic streets or skipping rocks on the rolling river.

The Thompson Hotel and Conference Centre is an excellent choice for business travellers. It offers excellent quality and service as well as an array of amenities, including a gym, hot tub and indoor pool. Conference facilities, wireless Internet and voice mail are also essential conveniences business travellers will appreciate. Similarly, Hotel Five 540 Forty is an upscale hotel on Victoria Street. Its location in the downtown business district and large meeting facilities make it ideal for hosting banquets and conferences for up to 200 people.

More economic accommodations can be found on the south side of downtown, along Columbia Street. Budget-conscious travellers may want to consider staying in an economy chain hotel such as the Howard Johnson or Travelodge, both of which feature clean, comfortable rooms and a number of complimentary services and amenities, including in-room coffee and tea, breakfast, access to a high-speed wireless Internet connection and use of an on-site fitness centre.

NORTH SHORE

The North Shore is a beautiful place to stay, convenient to the airport at the west end of the city and embracing McArthur Island Park, a barren sand dune that has been transformed into a modern recreational area with playing fields, a golf course, bicycle paths and walking trails. This area is also a wildlife sanctuary with picnic areas and an idyllic lagoon home to a variety of waterfowl.

Nearby, the Holiday Inn is a good option for those who want to stay on the North Shore in a mid-range accommodation. This large facility has a variety of rooms, including those suited to disabled travellers. Recreational facilities include a full fitness centre and indoor pool.

Tranquille Road is nearby, packed with an array of Canadian, contemporary and ethnic-style restaurants. Also close at hand is the Northills Shopping Centre, hosting specialty shops, a grocery store and cafes.

WEST END

On the west end of the Trans-Canada Highway, below the southwest tip of the spacious Kenna Cartwright Park, are a number of hotels along Roger's Way. These hotels are conveniently located on major routes close to the amenities of Aberdeen Mall. A mix of accommodations can be found on Roger's Way, mostly budget-friendly hotels like the Comfort Inn, Quality Inn and a second Travelodge.

Families may enjoy staying in the Hampton Inn, a mid-range hotel that is well suited to groups. Laundry facilities and kitchenettes with microwaves make it an ideal stop on a road trip or a great place to spend a few days while exploring the surrounding landscape. The Hampton Inn has all the basic amenities as well as recreational extras such as a gym, pool, hot tub, water slide and tennis and racquet ball courts.

There are two luxury accommodations on Roger's Way, the Four Points by Sheraton and Kamloops Towne Lodge. The Four Points has 78 well-appointed rooms as well as convenient amenities and services: a restaurant, sauna, indoor heated pool, room service and high-speed Internet access. The Kamloops Towne Lodge, also highly recommended, has a tropical courtyard, hot tub, sauna, pool and children's wading pool as well as a restaurant and lounge.

ORIENTATION & TRANSPORTATION

The name Kamloops comes from the word Tk'emlúps in the language of the First Nations people who live here. This means "where the rivers meet" and is a reference to the meeting place of the South and North Thompson rivers, which then travel westward together into Kamloops Lake. It is also an appropriate name given Kamloops' history as a hub city, where major roads meet.

Kamloops is the largest municipality in the region and situated on the Trans-Canada Highway (Highway 1), halfway between Vancouver and Calgary. It can also be reached by road from one of the many other major highways passing through the area, and by air. The airport services several regional carriers from Canada and the United States.

Kamloops is a small town and it is easy getting around on foot, using public transportation or by taxi. Walking and hiking trails weave through and around the townsite, making Kamloops very friendly to pedestrian traffic.
